Latest Reviews:
Mr. Oizo - Moustache (Half A Scissor) - videohoax Perhaps one of the most inventive experimental electronic releases in the last 5 years. Autechre said in an interview that this album and J Dilla's donuts were the most inspiring electronic music they had heard lately. Someone described it to me as 'you know how Bogdan has mutated drum and bass in a kind of bedroom style? well Mr oizo has done the same thing but with disco' I'd say oizo has even taken it into more experimental territory than Bogdan has ever gone and for some people (like the above) reviewer that can be a bad thing. |
Robust - El Foto Grande - CheoLopez If you like Rap, this album is for you! Notable songs on here are, "El Foto Grande", "What Up Fam", "Strictly Underground", and my personal favorite (My Ringtone) "Cold Chilling". I purchased Robust first release titled Potholes in our Molecules and I liked it, but El Foto Grande is way sicker. If you get a chance to see Robust or any Galapagos 4 cats go to the show and buy an album. Robust is one of Chicago's best. |
General D - Zanzaa General D was born in Mozambique, Africa (an ex-colony of Portugal) and immigrated as a child to Lisbon. He literally was the first rapper of any kind in Portugal to have a record deal. He signed a multi-album contract to the Portugal division of EMI records. Although he rapped in Portuguese and drew inspiration from American artists such as Public Enemy, Ice Cube and Ice T - his music had a distinct African flavor about it interlacing many live tribal percussion instruments. Although his whereabouts are unknown at this time, the charismatic and well loved General D should always be considered The Godfather of Portuguese hip hop. |
Ithaka - Saltwater Nomad - Zanzaa Are you doing in life what you was meant to? Are you doing in life what you was sent to? Are you living the life that you wanna live? Are you living your life in a way to win?
--Ithaka from "The Life You Wanna Live?"
The Chinese philosopher, Confucius once said that a wise man doesn't feel the need to differentiate between work or hobby. And more importantly he doesn't feel the need to reveal to others whether or not he is working or playing.
Observing from distance at the effortless way the multi-artistic Ithaka (aka Darin Pappas) traverses at ease between all of his chosen mediums of expression; [music, sculpture, writing and photography] it appears his life's journey is a soulful balancing act somewhere between the worlds of euphoric creation and aquatic diversion. But on closer inspection, looking at the expertise and attention to detail of any Ithaka project, it becomes evident the man is getting down to first-degree serious business, even if he himself isn't aware of it.
Born in southern California, the hip hop visionary and visual expressionist spent his early youth surfing LA and Orange Counties, but soon began his global wanderings - not only in pursuit of higher quality waves but of profound cultural experiences, both shore side and deep in the cities. For Ithaka, marriage of surf and street comes naturally.
After long blocks of time in Greece, Japan and other exotic locales, Ith arrived in Portugal in July of 1992 with a surfboard, wetsuit, Nikon FE camera and very little else. In addition to sampling the region's wealth of epic surf and making friends, he started exhibiting his photographs, creating new sculptures, publishing his short stories, and even began working as a radio host on a national music program. He left the region six years later with two studio albums under his belt and nine Portuguese Grammy nominations. An unlikely place to start an international music career, but Ithaka has not only been influenced by his many Siddharthian journeys, he has become a product of them. And he doesn't exactly reinvent himself at each intercontinental stop along the path, he merely keeps adding layers, carpet-bagging along the way newly learned skills and infinite wealth of mental archeology, the bases for most of his songs, stories and visuals. But even though global as they come as a human being, artist and surfer, he'll be the first to tell you it's not necessary to go far away to get away. He says,
It's all about perception. How you look at things. How you absorb things. Some of the wisest and most interesting people I've ever met have barely even left their home state. It¹s about breaking routine
And breaking routine is what Ithaka and his bag of tricks is all about. In contrast to his last audio work, Recorded in Rio (a melodic, mostly live-instrument hip hop album released in 2004), the new cd, SALTWATER NOMAD, his fifth full-length, goes to the polar opposite and is largely an electronic production. Recorded in Brazil with producer Tito Gomes, the two serve up twelve clean, bumping, minimalist hip hop story-songs.
Vocal-wise, Ithaka's fluid punctuality can be considered in outstanding company like Everlast, Michael Franti and the late Tupac. And although sonically, Saltwater Nomad will be considered a pop/rap record, lyrically don't expect generic Pimp & Ho/22"-rim/gansta-stylin' references. Ith successfully personalizes the genre, using it as a soundtrack for his straight-up, no bullshit, autobiographical story-telling, walking new ground across subjects like spirituality, global politics, nostalgia, lust, immigration, positive thinking, diabolic roommates (comedy), the intricate complexities of long lasting boy/girl unity and his passion of choice, wave-riding. All scribed with the Ithman's patented crafty, post-Beat Generation urban lyricism.
I ride since I was a small fry Sine the day mammy multiplied I ride to keep my soul alive I'll ride until the day, the day that I die I ride 'cuz I like the view from the tube I ride 'cuz I like the color blue I ride to keep my mojo intact So I got the goods to deliver When my baby gets back
Ithaka's music has been featured in several surfing films (including the award winning, Timmy Turner's Second Thoughts), and the hit basketball video game NBA 2K7. His hip-hop classic, "Escape From The City Of Angels"? appeared in Columbia Picture's feature film, The Replacement Killers.

THALMA de FREITAS - Zanzaa Thalma de Freitas is an outstanding singer originally from Sao Paulo Brazil. She is a solo artist as well being a member of the Rio de Janeiro project Orchestra Imperial. She sings in at least three languages (Portuguese, Spanish and English). She sings Samba, Jazz and Bossa Nova. And in 2004, she recorded some hip hop tracks with Ithaka for his album, Recorded in Rio produced by Berna Ceppas. She is also an actress who appears regularly on famous Brazilian soap operas. She's a star any way you look at hit. |
Cocoon Recordings - sbastien4678 I always said that I'll never like pure techno music but after hearing several tracks from this stunning label, I changed my mind on all the ways. I think I finally found the techno label suitable for trance and progressive lovers who wanna escape from the current cheesy or mainstream crap for teenagers . Every day music evolves constantly and sound as well returning some genres obsolete or others like new. Soft touch techno means future, even if some keep producing harder, minimal remains the best way to start when you are not "techno" drugged from ages. Coccon describes quality techno music, for its dark side, for its electronic side, for its deep and relaxing side as well. Everything is on it making the style very popular in our clubs. |
Sweatlodge Records - Zanzaa This is the small Los Angeles label owned by entrepreneur Craig Raidor Dahl, music manager Keith Young and hip hop artist/producer Ithaka (Ithaka Darin Pappas). They have some nice records, including Ithaka's Saltwater Nomad (produced by Tito Gomes) very smooth sounding hip hop with a lyrical edge that sometimes wander into a more ambient trip hop and spoken word direction. Very solid music in every aspect bringing to mind the energy of TuPac, Everlast, Sublime, Mos Def and Kanye. |
Elektrolux - distantHum A word of caution if you order music directly from these guys...
I bought 5 Elektrolux/Mikrolux cds directly from the label, but they were sent in a wimpy oversize padded mailer. The cds were obviously moving around quite a bit during transit, and the paperboard corners of the cd cases eventually ripped a hole in the mailer. I was fortunate to actually receive 3 of the 2 cds I ordered. The other 2 cds? Gone... The response from Elektrolux? Silence. Not a peep, after repeated emails in English and German.
So... just a word of caution for an otherwise fine label.

Trash Van Traxxx - vanszoe Trash Van Traxxx was born in Madrid in 1977 where she starts to love music listening her father,s records. She moves to Mediterranean side, in Benicassim, to grow up with a music festival and very soon, she go to another cities looking for inspiration...Valencia, Barcelona, London, in the last one she discovered dubstep 3 years ago. When she come backs to Barcelona starts to make some noise with underground parties called "hYbRiD" and produce some music aswell. Her style is a experimental dubstep with a lot of breakcore influences, sometimes with sounds of cats, movies or flamenco, but always fresh and surprising! AMAZING! |
Makshow - TheGreatSmellOfBrute Prior to their 2003 tour of the USA, Makshow was one of Blender magazine's featured artists, contributing the track Semi-Automatic to the cover CD 'Future Icons: 11 of the hottest unsigned bands in America!'
Presently (August 2008), Makshow are showcasing their new material (from a selection of 25 songs written by their prolific singer-songwriter Paul Day in 2006/2007) at a number of high-profile London venues, most recently The Fly in New Oxford Street. Their current sound is described as, "A misfit, bastard child of the seventies and eighties: melodic indie-rock with a dirty disco glam twist and a drop of sweat from Keith Richards' brow; guitar pop-rock with a dark underbelly.", with lyrical content inspired by the phenomena of celebrity culture, reality television and tabloid-everything. The band cites such influences as The Beatles, David Bowie, Pulp, REM, The Rolling Stones and Roxy Music, whilst stating that their new songs are a sardonic-yet-lighthearted reflection of life in what they call 'New Britain Plc'.
At the time of writing, more information regarding the band and examples of their new tracks could be found at their MySpace page. |
